Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside vs French Quarter: Which Walt Disney World Resort hotel is best for you?
If you are thinking about a stay at one of the Disney’s Port Orleans Resort hotels, here’s a guide to help you decide which one is right for you. We’ll explore how they are different, what they have in common, and what to expect when you book a room.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside and Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter are both Moderate hotels on-property at Walt Disney World. If you are trying to decide which is better, you’re not alone. These sister resorts are two of the most popular Moderate Resort hotels on property, and for good reason.
I’ve stayed at both of these hotels numerous times when visiting WDW. Both offer beautiful theming, convenient Disney transportation, and a relaxing escape from the parks. But while they share a location along the scenic Sassagoula River, the overall experience at each resort is surprisingly different.
If you’re debating between Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside vs French Quarter, this guide breaks down everything you need to know – from atmosphere and rooms to dining, amenities, and which is the better fit for your family.

Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside vs French Quarter: Design & Atmosphere
Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter are both lovely properties. Set along the scenic Sassagoula River, both resorts offer a relaxing, resort-style atmosphere that feels worlds away from the theme parks. The biggest difference between them comes down to size, theme, and overall vibe.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside leans into a peaceful, romantic “Old South” setting. Think sprawling grounds, tree-lined pathways, and stately Southern mansions in Magnolia Bend paired with rustic bayou-style lodges in Alligator Bayou. It’s quiet, scenic, and feels removed from the hustle of the parks.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter, on the other hand, is colorful, lively, and compact. Inspired by New Orleans’ historic district, the resort features cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies, and festive Mardi Gras details. Jazz music often fills the air, giving it a fun, energetic feel without being overwhelming.

► If you prefer serene and spread out, Riverside wins. If you want charm and convenience, French Quarter shines.
Size and Layout
Beyond theming, one of the biggest differences between these two resorts is their overall size and layout. This is so important as it can have a major impact on your stay.

Riverside is roughly twice as large as French Quarter, covering a much more expansive footprint along the Sassagoula River.
French Quarter’s compact layout is one of its biggest advantages and the main reason I typically prefer staying here. You can walk from one end of the resort to the other in about five minutes, making it incredibly easy to navigate. Everything – from the restaurants to the pool to transportation – is just a short walk from your room.
After a long park day, this convenience can make a big difference (especially with kids or tired teens). I love getting off the bus after a long day at the parks and being just steps away from my building. It’s also nice being able to pop into the food court, which is right next to the bus stop, to grab a drink or quick snack before or after the bus ride. Everything is centralized, which makes it so convenient.
Riverside, on the other hand, feels more like a true resort destination. Its larger size allows for more amenities, multiple pools, scenic walking paths, and beautifully landscaped grounds.

The atmosphere at Riverside is peaceful and immersive, but the trade-off is distance; depending on your room location, it can take 10 to 15 minutes to walk to dining, transportation, or the resort’s main building. There are also multiple bus stops, which means the one closest to your room might not be near the main building.
► When deciding between the two, consider your travel style: do you prefer a sprawling resort with room to explore, or a compact layout where everything is just steps away?
Rooms
When it comes to accommodations, both resorts offer comfortable Moderate-level rooms, with a few key differences.
Like other Disney Moderate hotels, both feature exterior room entrances rather than interior hallways, with views of landscaped grounds, courtyards, or riverfront areas. Water view upgrades are available if you want to stay closer to the Sassagoula River.

All rooms feature either one king or two queen beds. At Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, you’ll find more room categories and one major perk: select rooms in Alligator Bayou can sleep up to five guests thanks to a pull-down Murphy bed. This makes it one of the most affordable on-property options for larger families.
Room styles vary by section:
- Magnolia Bend: elegant and traditional
- Alligator Bayou: rustic and cozy
You can also upgrade to a Royal Guest Room at Riverside, which is more elaborately decorated and features special headboards with a light-up display.
At French Quarter, rooms are slightly more compact but thoughtfully designed with subtle New Orleans touches. They sleep up to four guests, but the trade-off is convenience.
Most rooms at the Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter are just a short walk from dining, transportation, and the pool.

All rooms at both properties feature a coffee maker, small fridge, large TV, and double sinks in the bath area.
► Traveling with a family of five? Riverside is your best bet. Prefer a shorter walk at the end of a long park day? French Quarter is hard to beat.
Recreation and Amenities
Pools and recreation are where these sister resorts really shine, and where their shared location becomes a major advantage.
One of the biggest perks? Guests staying at either resort can enjoy amenities at both properties, including pools, dining, and recreational activities. While feature pool access may occasionally be limited during peak times, this is rarely enforced – meaning you’re essentially getting two resorts in one.

The walking path between the resorts is not only convenient (though a little long) but also very beautiful, making it easy to explore both during your stay. You can also hop on the boat from French Quarter to Riverside.
