Do you need a rental car in Vegas?
When planning a trip to Las Vegas, this is one of the most common questions. While many people (including us!) drive, more than 50 million passengers from around the world fly into Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) each year. That’s a lot of people arriving in Las Vegas without a car!
So if you are wondering if you need to rent a car on your Vegas vacation, I’ve got all the info right here. And spoiler alert, the short answer is No. In fact, skipping a rental car can save you money, time, and a fair amount of stress. I travel to Las Vegas from Southern California often, and even though we usually drive, for the most part my car stays parked the whole time we are there.
Las Vegas is a city uniquely designed for tourists, especially when you’re staying on or near the Vegas Strip. With the the bulk of resorts and attractions all within walking distance (or a quick Uber ride), plentiful public transportation options, easy airport access, and sightseeing tours that will take you everywhere else, a car is often more of a burden than a benefit.
Here’s why I believe you don’t need a car in Las Vegas – and when renting one does make sense.
Reasons to Skip a Rental Car in Las Vegas
Parking Is Expensive (and Often Inconvenient)
One of the biggest downsides to having a car in Las Vegas is parking.
Gone are the days when you can pull up to just about any resort and a valet would whisk your car away for nothing more than a tip.
Most resorts in Las Vegas now charge parking fees, even for self-parking. These fees can add up quickly, especially if you’re hotel-hopping, which is common in Vegas.
Beyond cost, parking garages at Vegas resorts are huge. You may find yourself walking 10 to 15 minutes just to get from your car to the casino floor or hotel lobby. Add traffic congestion on the Strip, and suddenly that “convenient” car doesn’t feel very convenient at all.
Everything You Need on the Strip Is Close By

The Las Vegas Strip is essentially a self-contained destination. Hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows, shops, and many attractions are all packed into a relatively small area.
While distances can look deceiving on a map, pedestrian bridges, indoor walkways, and air-conditioned casinos make getting around on foot manageable. Many hotels are directly connected or only a short walk apart, making it easy to explore without ever needing to drive. There are also a bunch of hotels connected by trams (like the Bellagio tram to Park MGM and Aria) and honestly riding them is not only convenient but one of the cool free things to do in Las Vegas with kids.
If you’re only in town for a few days, and your trip is focused on exploring casinos, dining, shows, and nightlife, you’ll likely spend most of your time within this walkable main area. And if you don’t, hopping in a cab or ride share is way more convenient for getting around town.
The Airport Rental Car Center Is Off-Site
Another often-overlooked reason not to rent a car in Las Vegas is the location of the Las Vegas Airport Rent-A-Car Center. All major rental companies operate out of this centralized off-site rental car center, which is located three miles away from the airport.
This means you’ll need to take a shuttle bus from the terminal just to pick up your vehicle.
During busy travel periods, this process can be surprisingly time-consuming. After picking up your luggage, you’ll have to wait for a shuttle, ride to the Rent-A-Car Center, stand in line, and then repeat the process again when you return the car.
Meanwhile, you could have hopped in a cab right outside of Baggage Claim and been checking into your hotel within 15 minutes!
If you’re only planning to stay on the Strip or rely on tours and public transportation, skipping the rental car can save both time and a whole lot of hassle right from the start of your trip.
Public Transportation Is Widely Available and Easy to Use

Las Vegas has surprisingly solid public transportation for visitors. The RTC buses run up and down the Strip 24/7, with routes designed specifically for tourists. These buses are affordable, frequent, and stop at or near all major resorts.
The Las Vegas Monorail is another convenient option, especially if you’re staying on the north or central Strip. It connects several major hotels and convention centers and is fast, clean, air-conditioned, and runs frequently.
Between buses and the monorail, you can cover a lot of ground without the hassle of driving. For a few bucks more, you’ll have no problem finding a cab or ride share.
Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours Make Sightseeing Easy

If you want to see more of Las Vegas, hop-on hop-off bus tours are a great alternative to renting a car.
Taking the Big Bus Las Vegas Hop On Hop Off Tour is a great way to explore all the city’s top landmarks with flexibility and ease. There are several tour options, including a nighttime tour. Pop on a pair of headphones and listen to the fully narrated tour as you take in the sights.
The tour loops past major landmarks on and around the Strip, Downtown Las Vegas, and Fremont Street. You can get off at attractions that interest you, explore at your own pace, and hop back on when you’re ready – all without worrying about navigation, parking, or traffic.
It’s an easy, low-stress way to get oriented and see the highlights of the city. I even named this tour one of the top things to do in Las Vegas with teens because we enjoyed it so much on a family trip!
Guided Tours Cover Major Attractions Off the Strip

Even for attractions outside the Strip, you don’t need your own vehicle. Las Vegas is a major hub for guided excursions, with sightseeing tours departing daily to popular destinations like:
- Hoover Dam
- Grand Canyon (West Rim and South Rim)
- Red Rock Canyon
- Valley of Fire
- Death Valley
These tours typically include hotel pickup and drop-off, transportation, and a knowledgeable guide. For many travelers, this is far more relaxing than driving unfamiliar desert roads, especially if you’re short on time or don’t want to plan logistics.
Airport Transportation and Shuttles: Easy Alternatives to Renting a Car
If you’re worried you’ll need a car to get from the airport to your hotel, don’t worry! Getting from Harry Reid International Airport to your hotel – regardless of where you’re staying – is pretty simple, even without a rental car. In fact, as noted above, I dare say it’s way easier without renting a car! Las Vegas offers some of the most convenient airport transportation options of any major tourist city.
Here’s a quick rundown of your options.
Rideshares and Taxis
Uber, Lyft, and taxis are readily available at the airport, with designated pickup areas clearly marked. The ride to most Strip hotels typically takes 10 to15 minutes, and pricing is often reasonable. Actually, it’s a lot less than the cost of renting a car and paying for parking.
Do note however that while taxis are readily available right outside of baggage claim, you’ll need to walk a bit to get to the designated rideshare pick-up area.
Hotel and Shared Airport Shuttles
Several shared shuttle services operate between the airport and major hotels on the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas. These are a budget-friendly option, particularly for solo travelers or those arriving during peak times when rideshare prices may surge.
While shared shuttles may take slightly longer due to multiple stops, they eliminate the need to navigate traffic or worry about parking once you arrive. They also have fixed rates posted by zone so you don’t have to worry about surprises.
Private Transfers
If you want to splurge on your Vegas vacation, private airport transfers are also widely available. These services provide direct, door-to-door transportation in a limo or luxury SUV and – if you are traveling with a group or big family – can be surprisingly cost-effective when split among multiple people.
When Renting a Car is a Good Idea
While you don’t need a car for most Vegas trips, there are some situations where renting one makes sense.
You may want a car if:
- You’re staying with family or a hotel far off the Strip or outside Downtown
- You plan on taking multiple day trips from Las Vegas (like to Red Rock or Zion National Park)
- You’re traveling with kids or a large group and want extra flexibility
- You prefer the convenience of coming and going on your own schedule
- You’re visiting for an extended stay and expect to leave tourist areas frequently
In these cases, the freedom of having your own car can outweigh the costs.
However, be aware that there are car rental locations at many hotels on the Vegas Strip, so it might be easier and more cost effective just to rent one for the day rather than rent at the airport when you land for the entire trip.

Final Thoughts: Skip the Car and Enjoy Vegas
When you consider how quick and accessible airport transportation is in Las Vegas, renting a car often feels redundant. With easy transfers to your hotel and plenty of transportation options once you arrive, there’s little reason to deal with the added complexity and expense of renting a car in Las Vegas.
If your trip revolves around the Strip, shows, dining, and classic Vegas experiences, you’ll likely enjoy your visit more by leaving the car behind. Less driving, less parking stress, and more time enjoying what Las Vegas does best.
