MGM Grand Pool Complex Overview

MGM-Grand-Pool

The MGM Grand Hotel & Casino pool area is one of the largest on the Las Vegas Strip. It is designed to feel like a tropical oasis in the middle of the desert.

Palm trees, waterfalls, bridges, fountains, and winding pathways connect the various pools and lounge areas, making it easy to spend an entire day here.

The MGM Grand pool complex includes:

  • Four swimming pools
  • A lazy river
  • Three whirlpools
  • Waterfalls and tropical landscaping
  • Daybeds and cabanas
  • A large central pool deck
  • Food and beverage service
  • Multiple bars and snack areas

The atmosphere here tends to be lively but still family-friendly during the daytime. Unlike some Las Vegas hotels that focus heavily on dayclub party scenes, the MGM Grand pool appeals to a broader mix of people. The lazy river makes it especially family-friendly.

Pool access is complimentary for registered hotel guests and included in the resort fee. If you are not staying at the hotel, you can gain access by reserving a cabana or daybed.

MGM Grand Lazy River

MGM Grand lazy river in Las Vegas

One of the biggest highlights of the MGM Grand pool area and the main reason we love it so much is the lazy river.

The MGM Grand lazy river winds through the tropical pool complex in a relaxing loop and is one of the most popular features at the resort – especially during the hot summer months in Las Vegas. MGM Grand is one of just a handful of Las Vegas hotels with lazy rivers, and I think their river is actually longer than the others. This makes it more relaxing and not as crowded.

You can float along the river while passing waterfalls, palm trees, and shaded areas that help create a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere considering you are steps away from the Las Vegas Strip.

Travel Insight

If enjoying the lazy river is a priority for your trip, try to visit earlier in the morning. By midday during peak summer season, the lazy river can become extremely crowded.

While some resorts rent or loan inner tubes to use for free, MGM Grand will only sell them to you. In the world of Vegas nickel and diming these days, I am sorry to say they have found another way to make a buck!

You can, however, bring your own tube, but they’ll charge a fee to blow it up for you. If you want to use a tube on the lazy river and don’t have your own, the only option is purchase one. The current price is $25 plus tax…but if you buy one they will blow it up for free.

The Main Pools

In addition to the lazy river, the MGM Grand has four separate pools spread throughout the complex.

Some pools are designed for relaxing and lounging, while others are more social and energetic. One of the nice things about the MGM Grand pool area is that you can usually find a quieter corner if you want to escape some of the crowds.

The main pool areas feature thousands of lounge chairs, though they fill up quickly on weekends and during peak travel seasons.

I highly recommend arriving shortly after opening if you want to secure chairs together without paying for a reserved seating area. Unfortunately, most of the chairs right at the front of the pools and around the lazy river are rentals only. I got there at a little after 10 a.m. one morning and was able to find a spot next to the lazy river, but everything was full way before noon.

By late morning, most if not all of the complimentary lounge chairs are already claimed. Finding two or more together is even more of a challenge. If having a guaranteed spot matters to you, reserving a daybed, lounge chairs, or a cabana in advance can remove a lot of stress from the experience.

The pools themselves are not especially deep, making them ideal for casual swimming, cooling off, or lounging in the water.

Also worth noting: the pavement around the pool gets very hot in the summer. Water shoes or flip flops are highly recommended.

Cabanas & Daybeds

If you want guaranteed shade and a more comfortable home base for the day, the MGM Grand offers a large selection of cabanas, daybeds, and reserved seating options.

Cabana rentals typically include amenities such as:

  • Dedicated seating area
  • Ceiling fan
  • Television
  • Refrigerator stocked with beverages
  • Food and beverage service
  • Towels
  • Complimentary bottled water
  • Personal host service

Pricing varies dramatically depending on the season, day of the week, holidays, and location within he pool complex.

If you are visiting during peak summer months and plan to spend the entire day at the pool, a cabana can honestly be worth considering – especially for the guaranteed shade alone.

Palm Tree Beach Club at MGM Grand

One of the newest additions to the MGM Grand pool scene is Palm Tree Beach Club, which replaced the longtime Wet Republic Ultra Pool.

The new Palm Tree Beach Club brings a fresh tropical vibe to the MGM Grand, blending luxury dayclub energy with a more upscale beach resort atmosphere. The venue features:

  • Multiple pools
  • VIP cabanas and bungalows
  • Daybeds and lounge seating
  • Live DJs and entertainment
  • Tropical-inspired design
  • Elevated food and cocktail service

The atmosphere here is definitely more energetic and adult-focused compared to the main MGM Grand pool complex. In fact, based on the photos (I have not actually gone to the club) it is downright rowdy and packed. Not my scene anymore, but if you are young and looking for a good time during the day, this is a great place to party.

Like most Las Vegas dayclubs, admission fees typically apply, and guests must be 21 or older to enter.

Travel Insight

If you are staying at the MGM Grand primarily for the lazy river and family-friendly pools, don’t worry – Palm Tree Beach Club is separate from the main pool complex and does not dominate the atmosphere the way some Vegas pool parties can at smaller resorts.

Food & Drink Options at the MGM Grand Pool

The MGM Grand pool area offers several places to grab food and drinks throughout the day.

You can order cocktails, frozen drinks, beer, soda, and poolside bites directly from servers circulating the pool deck. My friend and I shared an order of chips and guacamole, and they were pretty good!

There is also Cabana Grill where you can order and pick up at the counter, with plenty of tables in the shade to enjoy your food.

As expected in Las Vegas, prices are definitely on the expensive side. Pool cocktails and frozen drinks can add up quickly, especially once taxes and gratuity are included.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere

One thing many visitors appreciate about the MGM Grand pool area is that it remains relatively family-friendly compared to some other major Las Vegas pool scenes.

Kids are welcome throughout most of the daytime pool areas, and families frequently spend hours floating the lazy river together.

That said, weekends – especially during summer – can definitely become more energetic with louder music, larger crowds, and more adult groups drinking by the pool.

If you are traveling with younger children, weekdays tend to offer a calmer experience.

The MGM Grand Las Vegas pool area is open seven days a week, all year long. However, during the winter season only certain areas are open. The lazy river is closed during the winter.

MGM Grand Pool Location & Access

Like many Las Vegas mega-resorts, the MGM Grand is enormous. It takes a little navigating to find the pool!

The MGM Grand pool complex is located behind the main hotel towers. From the casino floor or hotel lobby, follow the signs toward The District. You’ll pass lots of restaurants, the food court, shops, and the Las Vegas Monorail station along the way.

Depending on where your room is located, it can actually be quite a long walk to reach the pool complex. You’ll want to factor in extra walking time when heading down to the pool!
