California’s coastline stretches for over 840 miles, offering a diverse array of beaches that are sure to drive you straight into vacation mode. From the rugged shores of Northern California to the sun-soaked beaches in Southern California, each region boasts its own unique charm, beach vibes, and attractions to enjoy.
I am a Southern California local and love exploring the beautiful coastline that stretches along this state. I’ve put together this guide to the best beach towns in California to help you discover bucket list destinations and unforgettable experiences for an amazing vacation.
And since different regions along the coast offer different climates, terrain, and beach town experiences, I’ve broken this list into three sections – Southern California Beach Towns, Central California Beach Towns, and Northern California Beach Towns – to help you plan an amazing trip.
Best Southern California Beach Towns
Southern California beach towns are all about sun, surf, and family adventures.
1. Coronado: An Island Getaway in San Diego
Located just across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado Island is a beautiful beach town, filled with small-town charm, a premier beach setting, and lots of family-friendly activities.
Although called Coronado Island, Coronado is actually a peninsula accessed via the San Diego Coronado Bay Bridge. Whether you love playing in the sand or getting active on the water, you’ll find an amazing array of things to do on Coronado Island.
Although you don’t have to stay there to enjoy the beach, the best stretch of sand is located in front of the Hotel del Coronado. This is literally my favorite beach in San Diego! While the hotel provides an amazing backdrop as well as lots of convenient spots to grab a bite or pick up sunscreen, it’s a public beach for everyone to enjoy.
There are also plenty of spots to rent beach chairs, boogie boards, and other amenities for a perfect day on Coronado beach.
2. Catalina Island: Southern California’s Island of Romance
A day trip to Catalina Island is like stepping into a tropical paradise. Located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, this island offers crystal-clear waters, quaint coastal villages, and a variety of outdoor activities. There is more than enough to keep you busy for an entire day.
Catch the ferry from Long Beach and spend the day kayaking, snorkeling, or exploring the charming town of Avalon. For a more adventurous experience, take a zip line tour, or hike the scenic trails. Catalina’s relaxed pace and beautiful scenery make it an unforgettable island escape.
3. Laguna Beach: Awe-Inspiring Coastal Views
Laguna Beach is a seaside town is known for its gorgeous beaches, cafes, galleries, and scenic hiking trails. Spend your day relaxing at the beach, wandering through downtown, or exploring the picturesque Heisler Park.
Laguna Beach has a thriving art scene; you’ll want to check out some of the more than 100 art galleries in downtown Laguna Beach. There are also many lovely shops, restaurants, and boutique hotels, all within walking distance of the beach.
Laguna Beach is also famous for its tide pools and the stunning Pacific Coast Highway views. There are plenty of great things to do in Laguna Beach with kids, both on the coast and in the surrounding hills.
4. Newport Beach: Upscale Beach Town Charm
Newport Beach is a quintessential Southern California coastal town known for its upscale atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and world-class dining. One of my favorite things about Newport Beach is its long boardwalk and pier. It’s a vibrant atmosphere filled with people walking, rollerblading, and checking out all the cool and colorful vacation rentals lining the sand.
Spend your day relaxing on the golden sands of Balboa Peninsula, rent a Duffy boat to cruise around the picturesque harbor or try out other water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding.
Kids will love visiting the historic Balboa Fun Zone for some classic seaside fun. You can also explore the stylish shops and restaurants at Fashion Island or stroll along the Newport Pier. Newport Beach’s blend of luxury and laid-back beach vibes makes it a perfect day trip destination.

California’s Central Coast is where the state’s rich history meets natural beauty.
5. Santa Barbara: The American Riviera
Santa Barbara, often called the American Riviera due to its Mediterranean-like climate and stunning landscapes, offers a perfect blend of beach activities, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures for families.
There are many fun things to do in Santa Barbara with kids. For a dose of history and culture, families can explore the Santa Barbara Mission, founded in 1786, and take a stroll through the beautiful gardens. The MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, is a must-visit for curious minds of all ages, offering hands-on exhibits focused on science, technology, and the arts. You should also plan on spending some time on Santa Barbara’s famous Stearns Wharf, home of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center.
The city’s main beach, East Beach, provides ample space for sunbathing, volleyball, and picnicking, with the added bonus of a playground for younger children.
If you have kids, you’ll want to check out the Santa Barbara Zoo, home to over 500 animals in a beautiful 30-acre setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. For a unique perspective of the coastline, consider taking a family kayak tour to explore the sea caves at the nearby Channel Islands.

6. Pismo Beach: Classic Coastal Vibes
Pismo Beach, located in San Luis Obispo County, offers a perfect blend of small-town charm and exciting outdoor activities. The town’s expansive beach is ideal for swimming, surfing, and building sandcastles. For a truly unique experience, families can rent ATVs or dune buggies to explore the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area – the only place in California where vehicles are allowed to drive on the beach.
The Pismo Beach Pier, stretching 1,200 feet into the Pacific, is a focal point for fishing, sightseeing, and watching spectacular sunsets. Nature enthusiasts will love the Monarch Butterfly Grove, where thousands of monarch butterflies gather during their annual migration from October through February.
For a dose of nostalgia, treat the family to a bite at the famous Splash Café, located right by the pier. It is known for its award-winning clam chowder served in sourdough bread bowls. The retro neon sign and beachy decor add to the classic California vibe.
Be sure to also visit the Dinosaur Caves Park, a clifftop playground with life-sized dinosaur eggs and beautiful ocean views – perfect for a family picnic or letting the kids burn off some energy.
7. Avila Beach: A Hidden Gem for Families
Tucked away in a sheltered cove, Avila Beach offers a more intimate beach experience that’s perfect for families with young children. The calm waters and gentle waves make it an ideal spot for swimming and paddleboarding. The town’s compact size means everything is within walking distance, from the beach to restaurants and shops.
‘One of the main attractions for families is the Central Coast Aquarium, where kids can get hands-on experience with marine life in touch tanks and learn about ocean conservation. For a unique adventure, take a ride on the Avila Beach Trolley, a free service that connects the beach to nearby Port San Luis and Harford Pier, where you can watch fishermen bring in their daily catch or grab a fresh seafood lunch.
Visit Avila Valley Barn, a charming farm stand and petting zoo where kids can feed farm animals, enjoy homemade pies, and pick seasonal fruits and vegetables.
8. Carmel-By-The-Sea: A Picture-Perfect California Beach Town
Located on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel-By-The-Sea, often referred to simply as Carmel, is a charming small town made up of story book cottages and quaint, tree-lined streets. Though it’s a quiet town nestled along scenic coast, Carmel is just minutes away from some world-class attractions, including Big Sur, Pebble Beach, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Just one-square-mile in size, Carmel is one of the most beautiful beach towns in California. This quaint little town is home to hundreds of beautiful galleries, shops, cafes, bed and breakfasts, bakeries, and a world-class beach.

Northern California beach towns are defined by their rugged natural beauty.
9. Santa Cruz: The Quintessential California Beach Town
Santa Cruz embodies the spirit of California beach culture like no other town. Known for its world-famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, this vibrant community offers a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern attractions.
With more than 40 rides and attractions, you can easily spend an entire day exploring the Beach Boardwalk. This vintage amusement park, complete with the iconic Giant Dipper roller coaster and the beautifully restored Looff Carousel, is an iconic beach town landmark. Plus, the wide, sandy Main Beach in Santa Cruz provides ample space for sunbathing, beach volleyball, and sandcastle building.
Nature-loving families can explore the tide pools at Natural Bridges State Beach or take a scenic hike through the towering redwoods at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, just a short drive from the beach.
Visit the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, housed in a historic lighthouse, for a fascinating look at the town’s surf culture. This great little museum has photographs, surfboards, and other interesting artifacts tracing over 100 years of surfing history in Santa Cruz.
10. Pacifica and Half Moon Bay: Beautiful Coastlines You’ve Got to See
Just 30 miles south of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay offers a more serene beach experience without sacrificing family-friendly activities. The town’s expansive beaches, including Half Moon Bay State Beach and Dunes Beach, provide plenty of space for picnics, kite flying, and beachcombing.
The Coastside Trail, a paved multi-use path, is perfect for family bike rides or leisurely walks with stunning ocean views. Don’t miss a visit to the charming downtown area, where you can explore local shops, art galleries, and family-owned restaurants serving fresh, locally-sourced cuisine.
And if you really love family-friendly coastal hikes, be sure to check out Devil’s Slide Trail, just a few miles north in Pacifica.
We hiked this trail on our recent road trip and it was seriously one of prettiest spots ever. Devil’s Slide Trail gets its name from the jagged cliffs prone to rock slides. In fact, the trail used to be part of Highway 1, but the road was rerouted through a tunnel in 2013 due to frequent closures.
Now you can hike, bike, or even walk your dog on the old 1.3-mile stretch and take in sweeping views of the Pacific along the way.
