Set along the beautiful shores of the Gulf of Mexico, RumFish Beach Resort by Tradewinds in St. Pete Beach, Florida is the perfect family beach destination. With its expansive stretch of white sand beach, two heated pools, multitude of fun activities and family-friendly restaurants and lounges, RumFish Resort is the perfect spot for your family vacation.
Family-Friendly Tradewinds Island Resort
Located on Floridaâs Gulf Coast in St. Pete Beach, RumFish Beach Resort is part of Tradewinds Island Resorts. My son and I recently spent a few days at the totally redesigned RumFish Beach Resort. We visited after a week at Walt Disney World, and it was the perfect destination to decompress and enjoy some blissful downtime before the trip home.
Tradewinds Island Resorts is comprised of two amazing family-friendly hotels: RumFish Beach Resort (formerly Guy Harvey Outpost) and Tradewinds Island Grand.
What we loved the most is if you are staying at one resort, you can hop between the two and enjoy everything at both. Together, Tradewinds Island Resorts is set on 31 acres and is jam-packed with multiple pools, restaurants, beach bars, hotel amenities and activities.
In 2019, TradeWinds Island Resorts announced that it was rebranding the Guy Harvey Outpost property. The newly named RumFish Beach Resort was completely updated, though kept its relaxed new Florida coastal vibe.
The resort is decorated with artwork and décor by local marine artists, including Thomas Krause. Rooms at the hotel were thoroughly upgraded, as well. Hotel rooms and suites received new paint, furnishings, bedding and linens, and newly added balconies on some.

Rooms at RumFish Beach Resort
There are literally dozens of room types available between the two resorts â from a standard hotel room to gulf front two-bedroom suite. RumFish Beach Resort alone features 211 renovated guest rooms. Many of these rooms offer patios or balconies, some with breathtaking views of the Gulf.
We stayed in a gulf front one-bedroom suite, which as the name suggests had a magnificent view of the water. Clocking in at a comfortable 480 square feet, you enter the room from an exterior hallway into the bedroom area, then there is the bathroom and pass-through kitchen, and finally a living room with pull-out sofa bed overlooking the Gulf.
This room layout was fantastic, because it one person wants to go to sleep early, the others can still stay in the living room and enjoy the balcony. Suites feature two televisions, as well. And the full kitchen came in handy for storing cold drinks and making our own simple breakfasts.
Standard size rooms at the RumFish Beach Resort are smaller but comfortable. Thereâs not a ton of extra space, but perfectly adequate if you are planning to spend most of your time outside the room. (However, weâd definitely recommend upgrading to a suite if your budget allows!)
Smoking rooms are available. Pet-friendly rooms are also available if you happen to be traveling with a dog. All rooms at RumFish Resort feature a wet bar area with mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. Overall, this is a very relaxed and family friendly resort!
Tradewinds Island Resorts Activities
Between the two hotels, there are seven pools to choose from, including one for adults only at both Island Grand and RumFish Beach Resort. For sports enthusiasts who like their time in the water to be a little more active, there are water sports including paddle boarding, parasailing and snorkeling.
On the land, enjoy volleyball, water slides and a variety of other beach activities. Kids will love the big blow-up slide on the beach and the touch tank!
Itâs worth mentioning again that a stay at the RumFish Beach Resort entitles guests to full open range at Tradewinds Grand, as well. Tradewinds âvalue-packed resort feeâ comes with an extensive list of benefits. The Tradewindsâ Resort Amenity Fee is currently $45 per night.

Dining at RumFish Beach Resort
With 14 restaurants and bars to choose from between the two hotels, you wonât go hungry at Tradewinds. RumFish Beach Resort has several eateries, and room service is available. It is also just a short walk over to Tradewinds Island Grand from RumFish Resort, where youâll find even more available dining options.
Just as youâd expect at a beach resort, the atmosphere at Tradewinds Island Resorts is casual. Feel free to wander on up to the bar in your flip-flops and swimsuit. In fact, youâd probably feel overdressed wearing much more!
RumFish Beach Resort has The Sandbox Beach Lounge, an outdoor bar facing the beach with live music, drink specials, and open fire tables every evening. You can also grab a bite at Gulfside Grill.
The one restaurant you wonât want to miss however is the extraordinary RumFish Grill. This restaurant was so good, we actually dined there both nights of our stay.
The restaurantâs main attraction is a 33,500 gallon aquarium, as featured on Animal Planetâs hit series, âTanked.â The aquarium encompasses an entire wall of the dining room and serves as an impressive backdrop while youâre enjoying your meal.
The main restaurant was fully booked the first night of our stay, but we were able to get a table in the bar area (no reservations necessary, and kids are allowed). The second night, we were able to get a reservation and had a fantastic time dining next to the aquarium.
We shared the salmon one night and a steak the other, and capped off dinner both nights with a slice of key lime pie, which was absolutely divine.

This looks like a fun place! I particularly like the âroundupâ at the beginning of the post. Very helpful.

Worse resort in Florida! Stayed here for our 25th Wedding Anniversary and the staff was the rudest people ever met. The room was a 2 x 2 supposedly King Room with Ocean view but no balcony (this is the first hotel). We actually had our credit card number stolen by the cafe staff and used once we leave the hotel. We had reservations for our 25th Wedding Anniversary at Rum Fish Grill well in advance and was seated at the back of the restaurant and our anniversary even though my husband stated the reason was never mentioned. Very very rude all over the resort!!! NEVER EVER RETURN TO ST. PETE OR THIS RESORT. Go to Clearwater and several beautiful resorts a lot better then this dump!
